Project Spotlight | Beach Skonga – One Ocean, Many Voices

What happens when Tanzania's beaches become classrooms and everyday conversations become opportunities to learn?

Beach Skonga: One Ocean, Many Voices is a community-led digital storytelling project bringing ocean science to life through authentic, unscripted conversations with people along Tanzania's coastline. From mangroves and coral reefs to plastic pollution and sustainable fishing, each episode transforms real community voices into engaging, accessible learning experiences in Swahili.

By making marine science relevant, relatable and shareable, the project is helping build ocean literacy, inspire stewardship, and connect communities with the ecosystems that support their livelihoods and future.

Project Spotlight | Rewriting the Sawfish Story

Sawfishes are among the world's most endangered marine species, yet they still inhabit Tanzania's coastal waters and river systems. Through education, storytelling and community engagement, Rewriting the Sawfish Story is helping to build a future where these remarkable animals are protected rather than overlooked.

This Blue Capacity supported project will develop an interactive bilingual children's book on sawfish ecology and conservation, alongside a practical safe-release guide for fishers. By working with schools, fishing communities and local partners in the Rufiji Delta, the project aims to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards while supporting responsible fishing practices that reduce accidental sawfish deaths.

By connecting science with local knowledge and community action, this initiative is helping rewrite the future for one of Tanzania's most threatened marine species.
